Kathmandu Metropolis Plans to Install Switch-Activated Traffic Lights at 36 Crossings: Successfully Inaugurated at Babarmahal

Kathmandu Metropolitan City is all set to implement a pelican crossing system at 36 locations, allowing pedestrians to cross streets by activating traffic lights through a button press. The Metropolitan Municipality, in collaboration with the road department, is installing this technology after its successful initiation at Babar Mahal on Monday.
Prashant Kharel, a road safety expert, mentioned the cooperation with the district court for electricity in implementing the system at Babar Mahal. He added that the metropolis installed this system at its own expense since the city addressed the increased in accident concerns in that area. Tenders are soon to open for additional installations this week. Kharel highlighted plans to install the technology near schools for the convenience of children, with the tender opening shortly.
During the inauguration of the Babarmahal traffic light on Monday, Chief Deputy Inspector General of Police Poshraj Pokharel explained that the green light activates 5 seconds after button press, allowing pedestrians 30 seconds to complete the zebra crossing. Notably, the light won't turn on for 2 minutes after a single press. Pokharel emphasized the importance of understanding how to use the system to prevent accidents.
