Israel extends help to Nepali agriculture sector

KATHMANDU, SEP 8: 

Israel’s Agency for International Development Cooperation (Mashav) and Agricultural Development Bank Ltd (ADBL) wrapped up another session of training on Better Livestock Management for Better Yield.

Mashav and ADBL have been conducting such trainings for capacity development in area of agriculture and agriculture extension services since last four years. The bank’s Central Training Institution had organised a 10-day training in cooperation with Mashav and Israel’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Finance minister Barshaman Pun, on the occasion, laid emphasis on the need for proper training programmes for farmers to help them maximise the productivity of their livestock or any other agriculture activity that contributes more than 33 per cent to the gross domestic product.

Two experts –– Bracha Gal and Dr Avner Shoham –– came to Nepal to share their expertise with 16 dairy farmers and 22 staff from the bank who participated in the training that covered topics on dairy health programme, nutrition, reproduction and fertility management, housing and milking management, feeding strategy for improving milk production, cattle breed selection techniques, capital budgeting, and enterprise and cost analysis. In 2008, Mashav entered into a three-year contract with ADBL to cooperate for commercialising agriculture in Nepal, which was renewed last year.

However, the cooperation between ADBL and Mashav dates back to almost two decades. In the last four years, about 187 individuals have been trained on different aspects of agriculture.
