India proposes developing waterways

KATHMANDU, Nov 12: A visiting Indian delegation headed by Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday pledged all possible support to Nepal to develop waterways. Indian Minister Gadkari made the proposal to develop waterways during a meeting with Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Bhimalendra Nidhi in Kathmandu.

“At the meeting, Gadkari proposed that India was ready to share its experience with Nepal for waterways development and provide all support needed,” Minister Nidhi said. The Indian side shared that waterways would cost cheaper by half compared to roads and railways. Minister Nidhi said the proposal for use of waterways within Nepal and between Nepal and India was unique and exciting.

Nidhi said that during the meeting he had drawn Indian attention toward the delay in the expansion of the first and second phase of postal road in the Tarai. The postal road is being developed with Indian support. In response the Indian Minister assured to take necessary steps for expediting the postal road development.

The Indian minister also gave an instant directive to the Indian Road Department Director who was accompanying him to take necessary decision to expedite the postal road construction.
