Importers still in dilemma

KATHMANDU, MAR 22: 

Nepali traders are still facing problems at customs points due to procedural change in the Duty Refund Procedure (DRP) as they have still been submitting bills which include the excise duty charged in India.

Nepal and India had agreed for a procedural change in DRP and it came into effect from March 1.

“Principally, traders should not pay excise duty in two different countries,” according to deputy director general at the Department of Customs (DoC) Laxman Aryal. “But, Nepali traders and importers are facing problems from March 1 because Indian exporters have not implemented the new rule and are adding excise duty in imports to Nepal.” The DoC has been clearing goods from customs points on collateral, he said. 

Now, the department is facing problems in levying customs duty on goods imported to Nepal because the bills include excise duty charged in India.
