Hold development summit, UN official tells FinMin

KATHMANDU, May 15:

In a meeting with Finance Minister Ram Sharan Mahat on Thursday, United Nations Assistant Secretary General Haoliang Xu has suggested that Nepal should hold a development summit with extensive participation of development partners, the private sector, civil society organizations, and other development stakeholders.

According to the finance ministry, Mahat informed Xu that the government attracts more investment to the country to achieve a high economic growth rate that will contribute to the social sector as well.

“Nepal has acknowledged the UN support, which we obtained in the past days,” Mahat said, adding “We are seeking more UN support to lift the human development index of the poor-performing districts here.”

Nepal is conducting various development programs according to its aim to be graduated in developing country by 2022 from the status of least developed country.

Xu is currently in Nepal to find out about the people’s aspirations on the new political scenario to line-up with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) policy and programs accordingly. Xu is UNDP assistant administrator and the Director of the Asia Pacific regional bureau on the UN system.
