Growing influence of bank unions
KATHMANDU, AUG 15 -
Trade unions in government-owned banks are undeniably a force to reckon with. And, this is evident in the resignation of Shyam Singh Pandey, chief executive officer of ADBL.
After the employees’ union affiliated to Nepali Congress (NC)—Financial Institute Employees Union of Nepal—locked his office along with the administration department protesting recent employees’ promotion, Pandey put in his papers on Thursday.
Newly appointed Rastriya Banijya Bank (RBB) CEO Shiva Devi Kafle is also facing a similar wrath from employees’ unions affiliated to NC and the Maoists. The unions have planned to bar her from entering her office by staging sit-in on Sunday until she steps down from her post.
A senior central bank official said political unionism has affected government banks severely. Even private banks are feeling the hit, the official said. “We cannot do anything because it is the responsibility of the political parties to ensure smooth functioning of banks,” added the official.
According to Mukti Nath Pant, president of the NC affiliated trade union at ADBL, said they locked the CEo’s office and administration as employees were not promoted fairly. “Instead of promoting temporary employees, the management promoted junior employees and those who came from outside the bank.”
However, Pandey said he resigned as he could not satisfy employees’ unions although he had promoted employees on merit basis. “I could not earn support of all four employees’ unions due to my professional approach.”
In RBB, the NC affiliated employees’ union said they protested the political appointment of CEO. Dipendra Thapa of the union said the appointment of a temporary CEO at a time when a selection committee is working to appoint new chief through open competition was politically motivated. But Kafle said her appointment was not politically motivated, but the need of hour, as NRB has provisioned that banks should not have an executive chairman.
