Government told to adopt integrated approach for poverty alleviation

KATHMANDU, May 25:
The Finance Committee of the legislature parliament has directed the government to take integrated and coordinated effort on poverty alleviation.
Organizing a meeting with the secretary and department heads under the Ministry of Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation on Sunday, the parliamentary committee urged for implementation of effective programs for poverty alleviation.
Speaking at the meeting, members of the committee questioned the rationale of forming a separate ministry for poverty alleviation when Poverty Alleviation Fund (PAF) under Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers was overseeing the sector.
"It will be difficult to alleviate poverty in the absence of integrated effort from all stakeholders,” Bharat Mohan Adhikari, chairman of the committee, said. “Poverty related programs should be conducted in a coordinated and effective way."
The government is distributing identification card for poor people in 25 districts which is expected to be completed by the end of July, Durga Neupane, executive vice-president of the central coordination board to distribute identity card to poor, said.
