Government set to make Nepal best tourist destination

The government is planning to promote Nepal as the best tourist destination within 15 years. According to the Programme and Policy for the fiscal year 2011-12 presented yesterday in the House, the government will also give continuaty to the national campaign Nepal Tourism Year 2011, apart from its 15 year planning.

“The policy of making Nepal as the best tourist destination within 15 years is a great move,” said member of Nepal Tourism Year 2011 working committee Dhurba Narayan Shrestha. “We are hopeful that the policy will give new lease of life to the tourism sector,” he said, adding that Nepal needs a stable government and a committed leader to make Nepal the best destination.

According to the Policy, Baraha Region, Janakpur, Muktinath, Swargadari, Khaptad and Dhorpatan will be developed as tourism centres and government will start construction of international conference centre at western development region. The government has also planned to establish Tourism Zone for equal promotion of tourism region and establish community tourism service centre at each tourism region.

“To make the air service more reliable, secured, economic, and efficient, the government plans to improve national carrier Nepal Airlines Corporation,” the Policy read. The ailing national flag-carrier has been in bad shape since long due to political bickering and managerial dispute among the general manager and executive chairman.

For the year 2011-12, it also has plans to upgrade Gautam Buddha (Bhairahawa), Pokhara, Janakpur, and Surkhet to regional airports and infrastructure upgradation of Karnali Zone Airport apart from the second international airport in Nijgadh, Bara.

Ministry asks Rs 1.42 billion

Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation has asked a budget of Rs 1.42 billion for the new fiscal year. “The amount is Rs 300 million more than the current fiscal year’s budget,” said joint secretary of the ministry Lok Bahadur Khatri. The ministry has been allocated Rs 1.12 billion budget for the current fiscal year. The ministry is planning to promote Nepal as a Major Tourist Hub in the international market. “With the new fiscal year’s budget, we are planning for all round promotion of Nepal as the main tourist destination,” he said, adding that the ministry this time is also planning to identify new tourist destination and new products.
