Government Eases Vehicle Registration and Ownership Transfer Procedures
The government has amended several provisions of the Transport Management Procedures Directive, 2060, to simplify the registration and ownership transfer processes for both new and used vehicles.
Under the revised provisions, vehicle owners will no longer be required to be physically present at the transport management office to complete vehicle registration or ownership transfer procedures.
According to a public notice issued by the Department of Transport Management, vehicle inspections conducted by authorized dealers will now be recognized for the registration process.
The previous requirement to take the vehicle to the transport management office for another inspection has been removed under the revised arrangement. The move is expected to reduce procedural delays and make vehicle registration more convenient for owners and buyers.
The revised provision also allows a person authorized through a power of attorney by the vehicle purchaser to complete registration and ownership transfer procedures on the purchaser’s behalf.
For this, the authorized representative must appear at the concerned transport management office with their original identification document, the purchaser’s photograph, and the purchaser’s original identification document.
The arrangement is intended to make vehicle-related administrative services more accessible, particularly when the purchaser is unable to appear in person.
The government has also removed the requirement for vehicle owners to be physically present for vehicle insurance and insurance renewal-related procedures.
The revised system further provides for technical access to vehicle sellers, distributors and companies to facilitate the collection of biometric details required during ownership transfer.
According to the Department of Transport Management, once the necessary technical arrangements are made in the Vehicle Registration System (VRS), vehicle sellers, distributors and companies will be provided access to collect biometric details during the ownership transfer of both private and public vehicles.
The department is expected to implement the technical arrangements through the VRS system, allowing biometric collection to be integrated into the ownership transfer process.
The amendments are aimed at reducing unnecessary physical visits to transport offices, streamlining vehicle-related services and making registration and ownership transfer procedures more efficient.
