Government-Built Business Tower in Damak Raises Concerns Over Viability

The completion of a business tower valued at over Rs 2 billion in Damak by the government has sparked concerns regarding its feasibility, as reports indicate a lack of interest from potential commercial occupants. The 18-storey tower, built under the leadership of CPN-UML chairman and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, awaits inauguration amid uncertainties surrounding its future utilization.
Secretary of the Ministry of Urban Development, Maniram Gelal, confirmed the completion of the tower, constructed to accommodate commercial activities, with the top two floors designated for sightseeing purposes. However, despite its infrastructure designed for commercial viability, no parties have formally expressed interest in leasing any of its floors.
The project manager of Urban Development and Building Construction, Sudeep Poudel, noted the absence of formal initiatives for floor reservations, despite informal proposals. Currently, the tower primarily attracts visitors for outdoor photo opportunities, with minimal indoor foot traffic.
Located approximately 6 km west of Damak Bazaar, concerns arise regarding the operational costs associated with managing businesses within the tower. An official from the Urban Development and Construction Department highlighted the challenges of operating enterprises at a distance from the established market hub, suggesting limited profitability prospects for potential tenants.
