KATHMANDU:

Garment Association Nepal (GAN)’s President Uday Raj Pandey passed away today while undergoing treatment for brain tumour in New Delhi.

Pandey was also known as a pioneer industrialist and exporter of readymade garments (RMG) and had made significant contribution in revitalising the garment industry that had suffered after quota phase-out in 2004 under the Multi-Fibre Arrangement of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). Nepal had lost significant share in the US market since then.

Pandey, who was at the helm of the association for two terms, had lobbied for duty-free facility for readymade garments manufactured by least developed countries (LDCs) in the markets of the developed countries through different forums.

Pandey had also filed candidacy for the post of vice president (Commodity) during the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI)’s election held in April this year.
