Former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba Opts Out of Upcoming HoR Election
Former Prime Minister and senior Nepali Congress leader Sher Bahadur Deuba has decided not to contest the upcoming election to the House of Representatives (HoR). Deuba, who has consistently represented Dadeldhura district in parliament since the 2048 BS elections, will not be a candidate this time, according to a statement issued by his secretariat.
The decision marks a significant political development, as Deuba has been one of the most influential figures in Nepal’s parliamentary politics for decades. His repeated electoral victories from Dadeldhura had made the district a stronghold associated closely with his political career.
The announcement comes as nominations are being registered today for candidates contesting under the first-past-the-post (FPTP) system for the House of Representatives election, which is scheduled to be held on March 5. Political parties across the country are finalizing their candidates as the election process formally moves forward.
While no further details were immediately provided regarding the reasons behind Deuba’s decision, political observers see the move as an important moment in Nepal’s evolving political landscape, potentially opening space for new leadership in Dadeldhura and within the Nepali Congress.
The Election Commission has stated that the nomination process will continue as per the announced schedule, with preparations underway to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election.
