Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal, UN Rights Chief Volker Turk Discuss Human Rights and Nepal UN Cooperation

Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal held a meeting with United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly at the UN Headquarters in New York.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting focused on various aspects of Nepal-UN cooperation, human rights, and Nepal's ongoing peace and development efforts.

During the discussion, the two sides exchanged views on Nepal's national ownership and peace process, emphasizing the importance of human rights in supporting sustainable peace and development.

They also discussed the close relationship between development and human rights, highlighting the need to ensure that development efforts remain inclusive and rights-based.

The meeting also addressed the growing impacts of climate change, which continue to pose challenges to vulnerable communities and development efforts.

The two sides further discussed Nepal's ongoing restoration and reconstruction efforts following the Bhotekoshi disaster, according to the ministry.

The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on Nepal's human rights priorities, peace process, development agenda, climate-related challenges, and cooperation with the United Nations.
