Fonepay, Nepal’s leading Payment System Operator, has integrated UnionPay International into its QR payment network, enabling UnionPay users from countries including China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Singapore to make seamless QR-based payments at over 2 million Fonepay merchants across Nepal.

The partnership was officially launched at an event in Kathmandu attended by representatives from Nepal Rastra Bank, Nepal Tourism Board, banks, financial institutions, and business communities. Fonepay CEO Diwas Kumar described the integration as a major milestone in positioning Nepal as a globally connected digital payment destination, while UnionPay International Vice President Zhuang Bei highlighted the convenience it will provide to international travelers and businesses.

The integration is expected to significantly benefit Nepal’s tourism economy by reducing reliance on cash among international visitors and improving payment convenience for merchants. The collaboration further strengthens Fonepay’s international network, which already includes partnerships with Alipay+, India’s UPI, and other South Asian and ASEAN payment systems.

Fonepay currently operates Nepal’s largest QR merchant network with over 20 lakh merchant touchpoints, while UnionPay has a presence in 183 countries and more than 10 million card issuances in Nepal.
