Economy in the doldrums

KATHMANDU, April 26:
Double-digit inflation, ballooning trade deficit with import growth outpacing exports by six times and difficult labour relations have all contributed to worsening economic condition. Amid all these, the government is preparing the budget, promising to boost economy. But there’s many a reason to doubt the ability of the government whether it can rescue the ailing economy and offer succour to the public from spiralling prices. Price hike stood at 10.2 per cent in the first seven months and is expected to rise further once price of petroleum products is jacked up next week. Similarly, capital expenditure — meant for development activities — has not been able to meet the target. The delayed budget has made it difficult for the government to spend capital expenditure.
