EC Launches TikTok Video Competition to Boost Voter Awareness Ahead of 2026 Elections
The Election Commission, Nepal has announced an innovative digital campaign using the popular social media platform TikTok to enhance voter education and election awareness ahead of the upcoming March 5, 2026, House of Representatives elections.
In an effort to reach a wider and younger audience, the Commission has introduced a nationwide TikTok video message competition aimed at encouraging citizens to create informative and engaging content related to the electoral process. The initiative is part of the EC’s broader strategy to utilize modern communication tools to strengthen democratic participation and ensure that accurate election-related information reaches voters in an accessible format.
According to the Commission, participants are required to produce a one-minute video focusing on themes such as voter education, the election code of conduct, and the overall importance of participating in democratic processes. The videos must be shared through the creator’s personal social media accounts and also submitted to the Commission via email no later than March 1.
The EC stated that the competition is designed not only to promote the upcoming elections but also to educate voters about their rights and responsibilities. Suggested content areas include general information about the election, why elections are necessary in a democratic system, the correct method of marking ballots, adherence to the election code of conduct, and awareness of voters’ duties.
To encourage participation, the Commission has announced cash prizes for the top three entries. The video receiving the highest number of viewers will be awarded Rs 50,000, while the second- and third-place winners will receive Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively. All winners will also be presented with certificates of recognition.
The EC emphasized that videos must be interactive, message-driven, and relevant to the context of the 2026 parliamentary elections. Priority will be given to submissions featuring original content, including authentic audio, creative storytelling, and independent acting performances, ensuring that messages resonate organically with audiences.
The Commission further noted that the final selection of winning videos will be carried out jointly by independent experts and Commission representatives to maintain fairness and quality standards.
By adopting short-form video as a communication tool, the EC aims to connect with digitally active citizens, particularly first-time voters, and foster informed participation in the electoral process. Officials believe that leveraging social media trends can make civic education more relatable and engaging, ultimately contributing to a more aware and responsible electorate.
The initiative marks one of the Commission’s most contemporary outreach efforts, reflecting a shift toward technology-driven public engagement in Nepal’s democratic practices.
