KATHMANDU:
Department of Revenue Investigation (DRI) has decided to investigate the trend of Hundi in collaboration with central bank and Central Investigation Bureau (CIB).

“A big chunk of money transaction is being made through illicit underground banking channel,” director general Shanta Bahadur Shrestha said, adding that rigorous investigation — in collaboration with the central bank and the Central Investigation Bureau — into the issue is must.

“It is found that firms and persons involved in informal money moving business have changed their way of carrying out business after the department started to crack down their network,” he said, adding that the department is facing problem to bring the guilty under the legal net.

The department has also received some strong tiff-offs of Hundi business, he revealed. “And reportedly some big names are involved in the illegal money transaction.”

The department has gathered some useful informations from Rana Das who was arrested from Lazimpat, Kathmandu in September.

Hundi has been emerging as a serious threat to national economy as it is bleeding the economy dry, Shrestha reiterated.
