KATHMANDU, FEB 02:

Department of Revenue Investigation (DRI) has taken four smuggled vehicles under its control.

The department took Ba 6 Cha 7634, Na 1 Cha 8909, Na 2 Kha 9050, and Na 2 Kha 3535, Toyota micro buses under its control from a servicing centre, said deputy director general at DRI Damodar Regmi. He, however, did not elaborate on how the vehicles were smuggled into the country.

All vehicles were found to be imported illegally, he said, adding the department is trying to identify the channel that has been active in importing smuggled vehicles.

Smuggling of vehicles is a serious issue, the department said, adding that all state authorities should tighten their vigilance to check whether more smuggled vehicles are plying on the roads.

The government will lose millions in revenue from vehicle smuggling if it becomes a trend, said Regmi. “Customs duty from vehicles is a lucrative source of revenue for the government.”
