DRI freezes Casino Anna accounts

Department of Revenue Investigation (DRI) asked the central bank to freeze bank accounts of Casino Anna, according to DRI deputy director general Shisir Kumar Dhungana.
The department initiated the action after Casino Anna failed to clear its dues, he said, adding that the bank account, however, has less amount to clear its royalty dues. "Casino Anna still has to pay Rs 110 million to the government but it has hardly Rs 2 million in its bank accounts. The department is committed to collect its royalty dues," according to him.
PAC had earlier directed the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation to collect the dues or revoke the licences of the casions. The ministry has been able to collect some dues from some of the casinos.
The action against casinos had been accelerated once the Public Accounts Committee started grilling the government officials and directed them to collect revenue dues at any cost. The committee on December 28, 2010 had directed the government to revoke licences of casinos failing to clear their dues within 35 days.
The department has in May started the process of collecting royalty dues of Nepal Recreation Centre by auctioning its assets, according to DRI DG Shanta Bahadur Shrestha said.
Meanwhilve, Public Accounts Committee today directed the Finance Ministry to submit details of royalty dues of casinos within three days. It also directed the ministry to inform whether it has implemented the committee's earlier decisions or not. "The committee directed the ministry to submit detail progress report including remaining royalty dues and ministry's initiatives to collect it," committee chairman Ram Krishna Yadav said.
