Digital signature to end forgery

KATHMANDU,JUNE 14: 

Government officials today emphasised on the need to introduce digital signature to ensure secure e-governance.

“The use of digital signature secures electronic transactions by bringing in authentication, confidentiality, integrity and legal non-repudiation,” said chief at the Office of Controller of Certification Authority Rajan Raj Panta at a programme organised by the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology here in the capital. 

Digital signature and electronic transactions have become highly secured these days, he said, adding that a digital signature works on the principle of Public Key Infrastructure. 

Digital signature is a cryptography based on a concept of key pairs –– private and public key –– which are large prime numbers generated by a mathematical algorithm.

“Public key of an individual is made known to receivers while the private key is kept confidential,” he said, adding that the private key helps prove unequivocally that you are who you claim to be. 

A Digital Signature Certificate establishes the identity of the sender filing the documents through the internet which a sender cannot revoke or deny, according to experts. “A digital signature ensures that no tampering of data is done once the document has been digitally signed.”

Digital signatures can ensure fairness in several businesses including electronic tender system, reiterated Panta. “All the wrongdoings in the e-bidding process will end once the government introduces digital signature,” he said.
