Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City Closes Educational Institutions to Control Virus
Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City in Sunsari district has taken a significant measure to control the dengue virus outbreak by closing all educational institutions within the municipality. The decision was made during an executive meeting held on Tuesday.
Harka Sampang, the Mayor of Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City, announced the closure of schools and the initiation of a dengue control campaign. The sub-metropolitan has called upon school teachers and students to actively participate in the campaign during the holiday period. Additionally, the meeting has urged social organizations, local development committees, and communities in all wards to join hands with teachers and students in their respective areas.
Matrika Bhattarai, the Chief Administrative Officer of Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City, clarified that the closure of schools is part of a campaign to identify and eradicate breeding sites of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, responsible for spreading dengue. The focus is on eliminating larvae and pupae breeding spots. Naresh Kumar Ivaram, Ward Chairperson of Dharan-15, emphasized the importance of destroying mosquito breeding sites, stating that health camps and drug distribution alone would not be sufficient to control the dengue outbreak.
Tragically, eight people, including a young girl, have lost their lives to dengue in Dharan since the third week of May. The situation has put a strain on healthcare facilities, making it difficult for dengue patients to find beds in private clinics and the VP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences.
Umesh Mehta, the Head of the Health Division of Dharan Sub-Metropolis, shared concerning statistics, revealing that out of 4,218 people examined until the 15th of Shrawan, 2,495 individuals tested positive for dengue.
The closure of educational institutions and the comprehensive dengue control campaign reflect the city's urgent efforts to curb the virus's spread and protect public health. Authorities and communities are collaborating to combat the outbreak and mitigate its impact on the population.
