BIRATNAGAR:

A local businessman has been arrested with possession of smuggled gold and silver, among other valuables, in Dharan-4 on Monday

Deepak Agrawal was held with 70 kg silver, 30 tola gold and Rs 5.2 million in cash. Deepak, who owns Mahesh Plastic Pvt. Ltd., had hidden the valuables at his house, said DSP Sanjay Singh Thapa.

However, Deepak has told the police that the valuables belong to one Sunil Agrawal, Chief of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealer's Association (NGSDA), Sunasari.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that Sunil is Deepak's wife relative. He has been absconding after multiple cases related to corruption were lodged against him. "We are looking for him," said DSP Thapa.

Meanwhile, Mohan Kaji Shakya, Vice Chairman of NGSDA has also echoed Deepak's statement that the valuables actually belong to Sunil.

"He might have smuggled the valuables from India and hidden them in his relative's house," police said.

The confiscated valuables have been sent to the Department of Revenue Investigation (DRI) for further investigation.
