Commercialisation of agriculture a must

The commercialisation of agriculture is key to import substitution, according to the central bank governor.
“The development of agro-forestries, fisheries, poultry and commercial agro farming will help attain import-substitution,” said Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) governor Dr Yubaraj Khatiwada in the closing ceremony of training on Fisheries Based Management organised by Agriculture Development Bank Ltd (ADBL) and Mashav- Israel’s Agency for International Development Co-operation.
“Despite being a commercial bank in legal status ADBL has not been able to focus more on agro development,” he said, emphasising on the importance of agriculture as the means to create jobs and increase rural productivity along with being the tool to fight against food insecurity.
Mashav had entered into a three-year agreement with Agriculture Development Bank Ltd in 2008 regarding the cooperation for commercialisation of agriculture. However, the co-operation between Agriculture Development Bank Ltd and Mashav dates back to almost two decades. In the last three years, about 140 individuals have been trained regarding different aspects of the agriculture.
The co-operation has been beneficial to the bank as it has helped us in market promotion, market analysis, credit appraisal which has led to improvement in operation and policy making of the bank,” said officiating CEO of the bank Upendra Bahadur Karki.
“To facilitate the training graduates and other small entrepreneurs Agriculture Development Bank Ltd is planning to establish SMEs division also,” he added. The ten-day long training was organised by Agriculture Development Bank Ltd Central Training Institution in co-operation with Mashav and Insrael’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The total of 26 participants including Agriculture Development Bank Ltd staffers and fishery entrepreneurs took part in the training programme. Mashav has been conducting training programmes in Nepal since 2003.
Mashav and Agriculture Development Bank Ltd have conducted about five on the spot training programmes in the areas of project planning and implementation, micro credit for SMEs, poultry and fishery management to list a few.
