KATHMANDU, APR 07 -

The Nepal Stock Exchange (Nepse) gained 1.82 points last week to settle at 513.17 points on Thursday from Sunday’s 511.35 points.

Over the week, the market rose in the first three days, but shed points on Wednesday and Thursday.

Analyst Rabindra Bhattarai attributed the growth in the benchmark index to the payback of money to share investors by the Commerz and Trust Bank. “Those who were not selected for share allotment must have reinvested in the other companies,” he said.

Of the nine trading groups, hydropower companies’ group was the largest gainer with a double digit growth. The hydropower sub-index increased by 10.68 points to 1,020.58 points. It was followed by insurance companies and commercial banks which grew by 7.46 points and 5.24 points, respectively.

Among the major losers were hotels and others, both posted double-digit losses. Hotels shed 12.30 points to 629.78 points, while others lost 10.57 points to 670.86 points. The indices of finance and development banks also fell by 1.50 points and 0.50 points, respectively. The manufacturing sector remained constant at 840.23 points.

Bhattarai expressed hope the share market will gain pace from next month. “After the end of the third quarter, banks will start providing loans to stock investors,” he said. Last week, Nepal Bangladesh Bank topped in terms of transaction volume — Rs 58.2 million realised from 654 transactions. Civil Bank topped in terms of the number of shares traded.

The sensitive index that measures transactions of ‘A’ class companies increased by 0.54 points to close at 129.63 points on Thursday.

Over the week, the capital market saw transactions of 107 companies’ shares. The total market transaction volume rose 27.28 percent to Rs 412.5 million.
