British entrepreneurs here to study investment potential
KATHMANDU, OCT 16 -
A team of British entrepreneurs representing more than 15 companies have arrived in Nepal for the first time to study potential for investment in the country. They represent different sectors such as education, hydropower, tourism, physical infrastructure, design, construction and international media management.
The team met Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha on Friday.
Nepal had a trade-deficit of about Rs 6 billion with the UK in the fiscal year 2009-10. During the period, Nepal’s export to England was worth Rs 1.22 billion and import worth Rs 7.29 billion.
The Nepali Embassy in UK, British government agencies—UK Trade and Investment and Foreign and Commonwealth Office—Gateway Asia and Nepal Britain Chamber of Commerce coordinated the team’s Nepal visit.
“British entrepreneurs’ interest to invest in Nepal has been growing since 2008,” said Prashant Kunwar, project manager of trade delegation at the embassy of Nepal in UK. “There will be discussions on potential areas of investment during the team’s meeting with political leaders, government employees and private sector representatives.”
During the visit, the team will hold discussions on possibility of investing here at individual or partnership levels.
President of Nepal Britain Chamber of Commerce and Industry Rajendra Khetan said Nepal could attract investment from the UK in 10 key areas. “This visit will give a new introduction of Nepal to the corporate sector of the UK,” he said.
According to Khetan, if investment comes from the UK, it will be easier to attract investment from other European countries. A technical team is supposed to carry out the study to find out potential areas of investment here.
Likewise, a team from BCCI will visit the UK to hold discussions on investment with British investors concerned.
Nepal’s Ambassador to the UK Suresh Chalise said the visit would pave the way for joint investment form British entrepreneurs, non-resident Nepalis and Nepal nationals here.
Of late, several European countries are facing economic problems. Purchasing power of the general public there has come down due to unemployment. According to Chalise, in such a condition, possibilities of British investors coming to Nepal are high. “Since Nepal is placed between two giant economies—India and China—British investors might give it importance,” he said.
Experts say export to India and China can be made from Nepal easily. “Moreover, Nepal has a plenty of sectors for investment,” said Chalise.
