BRICS Summit to Begin September 12 as Delhi Enforces Massive Security

New Delhi has stepped up security across the capital ahead of the BRICS Summit scheduled for September 12–13, as more than 20 world leaders are expected to gather for the high-level meeting.

The presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has prompted authorities to introduce extensive security arrangements covering major roads, hotels, the summit venue and surrounding airspace.

Around 30,000 security personnel, including paramilitary forces and specialised commandos, have reportedly been deployed across Delhi. Nearly 4,800 traffic police personnel are also involved in managing VIP movements and traffic restrictions.

The NSG and Delhi Police’s SWAT teams have conducted security drills ahead of the summit, while thousands of additional personnel have reportedly been kept on standby.

Authorities have imposed restrictions on several major roads and introduced diversions along important routes connecting Indira Gandhi International Airport with Bharat Mandapam, the summit venue.

Airspace restrictions have also been introduced, with limits on drones, UAVs and other small aerial activities around Delhi during the summit period. Anti-drone systems and electronic jammers have reportedly been installed at sensitive locations.

Foreign delegations are being accommodated in several luxury hotels across Central Delhi, with thousands of rooms prepared for visiting leaders and officials.

Special security arrangements have also been made for Putin and Xi. Putin is expected to use his armoured Aurus vehicle, while Xi’s Hongqi N701 is reportedly being brought to India for his transportation.

Authorities have additionally strengthened surveillance and cybersecurity measures, including AI-assisted facial recognition and a multi-agency mechanism to counter potential cyber threats.

With Delhi expecting the arrival of numerous heads of state and senior officials, security agencies have placed the capital on high alert throughout the summit.
