Bhattarai likely to announce relief programmes today
KATHMANDU, SEP 08 -
The government is all set to unveil relief programmes that range from making the supply of essential commodities smoother to ensuring free bed facilities in government hospitals.
According to a highly-placed source at the Prime Minister’s office, Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai is likely to address the nation on the relief programmes after the Cabinet approves the same on Thursday morning.
According to sources, the PM will also request people to not have high expectations from the government as its main priority is concluding the peace and constitution writing processes.
As per the programmes, the government will set up fair price shops across the country. It will also make arrangements for dispatching food items to remote areas with immediate effect.
Sources said the government is also planning to ensure free bed facilities in government hospitals. Similarly, the government is planning to provide relief to victims of the Maoist insurgency and Madhesi movements. However, it is learnt that the PM is under pressure from his party to give cash to injured party cadres and kin of persons the party considers martyrs.
A core team of officials and PM Bhattarai were busy until late Wednesday evening to give a final shape to the relief programmes. Earlier in the day, the chief secretary had called a meeting of secretaries to discuss the relief programmes.
The PM has prioritised five tasks—peace process, constitution writing, relief programme, good governance and economic development. Sources privy to the negotiations told the Post that the relief programmes will be brought under the current budget.
The government is also planning to form a monitoring team to ensure that private hospitals also allocate a certain number of free beds to the needy. While obtaining their licences, private hospitals pledge to allocate free beds to certain patients.
Agriculture has also featured as a priority for the government. The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives is planning to reduce the price and ensure smooth supply of fertilisers.
The government will pay special attention to check black marketing and artificial price hikes in consumer items in view of the upcoming festivals of Dashain and Tihar. Mechanisms to ensure smooth supply of commodities will be upgraded and made effective.
