Bank shares push Nepse up
KATHMANDU:
The good run of listed banks in the stock market pushed the Nepse index up by 6.39 points this week -September 18 to 23.
The commercial banks’ subgroup earned 12.89 points as the investors seem to have got over the initial hang of low dividends pledged by the financial institutions. Development banks also pulled itself up by 4.12 points in the week’s trading. However, another subgroup among the financial intermediaries -finance companies slumped by 1.17 points.
On Sunday morning the stock market opened at 321.18 points that declined to 318.56 points by the end of the day’s trading. Next day also the index went further down to 317.36 points. But the benchmark index for Nepali securities market started its ascent from Tuesday and by the end of the week it stood at 327.57 points.
The stock exchange witnessed 500,300 unit shares of 118 companies worth Rs 94.33 million being traded through 5920 transactions in the five trading days. This is 17 per cent decline in the trading volume in comparison to that of last week.
With the climb of Nepse index, the sensitive index that measures performance of Class ‘A’ companies went up by 1.81 points reaching 80.67 points on the week’s trading. Among the total transactions, the trading of blue chip stocks of class ‘A’ companies consisted of 56.32 per cent amounting to Rs 59 million.
The float index that indicates the performance of the actual shares traded throughout the week also moved up by 0.06 points.
Manufacturing subgroup plunged by 5.45 points as Unilever lost Rs 105 per unit shares in the last week’s trading. Hydropower companies’ loss also pulled hydropower subgroup by 0.24 points. Hotels also lost 2.09 points while insurance companies earned 0.87 points.
Nepal Telecom’s loss of Re 1 per unit share caused the others subgroup to loose 1.18 points.
Chilime Hydropower Company topped the charts in terms of transaction amount with trading worth Rs 12.6 million. Kamana Bikas Bank was fore runner in terms of number of transactions with 1186 transactions. In terms of numbers of shares traded National Hydropower topped by trading of 105,255 unit shares.
The top five performers of the week are Chilime Hydropower (Rs 12.69 million), Nepal Investment Bank (Rs 6.03 million), National Hydropower Company (Rs 5.73 million), NIC Bank (Rs 4.93 million), and Bank of Kathmandu (Rs 4.48 million).
More than 1 million units of right shares and 300,000 unit of bonus shares were listed in Nepse this week.
