About 500 dairy industries are in operation in the country and are producing about 1.6 million metric tonnes of milk, Dr Balak Chudhari, Technical Director at the National Dairy Development Board, said. The production was not enough to meet the demand, he added.

He further said that Nepal is annually importing 6,000 metric tonnes of powdered milk and 1,800 tonnes of butter milk from the foreign countries.

These items have been imported from Bihar, India, Chaudhary added.

He said some 3,000 metric tonnes of different sweets items made from the milk have been exported.

According to the Ministry of Health and Population, a healthy person has to consume 57 liters of milk annually but only 52 litres of milk was found consumed due to various reasons.
