AML dept to take cases of dons
KATHMANDU:
Anti-Money Laundering Department is likely to charge a gangster Kumar Lama under the Anti-Money Laundering Act, according to the Finance Ministry source.
The department is taking action after the accused source of income is found to be suspicious, director general of Department of Revenue Investigation Shanta Bahadur Shrestha said.
"The case was first forwarded to Department of Revenue Investigation but after the Anti-Money Laundering Department was formed the case has been referred to it," he informed.
Police on July 22 had arrested Lama believed to have long been involved in an extortion and fraud racket in the capital. Lama, who is also the proprietor of Kathmandu-based National Siruwa Kreshwor Dharma JP, a construction and contracting firm, is among the ‘wealthiest gangsters’ in Kathmandu, according to the police.
The Anti-Money Laundering Department will start taking action against gangsters, who have amassed wealth without sources in the future, according to the ministry.
