Almost four-lakh Nepalis join foreign job last fiscal year

About 3,54,716 Nepalis joined foreign jobs last year in search of livelihood amid increasing unemployment in the country.
According to Department of Foreign Employment, some 60,622 more Nepali migrant workers joined the foreign jobs in the fiscal year 2010-11 compared to a fiscal year ago’s 2,94,094.
High demand from Qatar in second half of the fiscal year 2010-11 increased the job seekers outflow to Gulf countries. Numbers of Nepali hired in Qatar doubled between February to June while hiring in Malaysia slowdown following their drive to control illegal workers at the time.
Malaysia had stopped new work visa for three months starting April 2011.
Despite changes in hiring patterns of two major destinations, Malaysia still tops the chart by hiring 1,05,906 Nepalis in 2010-11, followed by Qatar (1,02,966), Saudi Arabia (71,116), the United Arab Emirates (44,464) and Kuwait (15,187).
Overall, the top five destinations hired 95.74 per cent of Nepali foreign job aspirants. Bahrain becomes the sixth preferred destination for Nepalis last year hiring 4,647 workers and Oman hired 2,422 Nepalis and hold eighth place. South Korea — dream destination of Nepali youth — hired 3,703 Nepalis under Employment Permit System (EPS) while Asian countries Afghanistan and Japan hired 655 and 593 Nepalis respectively.
Mandatory registration provision introduced in April for job extenders has played key role in increasing number of migrants. About 40,461 Nepalis joined foreign jobs in Jestha (mid-May to mid-June) and the number further increased to 44,715 in Asar (mid-June to mid-July). About 19,64,346 Nepalis are working in over four dozen destination countries with major share in Malaysia and three Gulf countries – Qatar, Saudi Arabia and UAE.
According to Economic Survey, around 6,50,700 Nepalis are currently working in Malaysia followed by Qatar (5,40,916), Saudi Arabia (4,00,562), the UAE (2,41,975) and Kuwait (31,507). Other countries that have over one thousand Nepali migrant workers are South Korea, Bahrain, Oman, Hong Kong, Japan and Afghanistan.
