Thousands of young demonstrators took to the streets across major German cities on Saturday as part of nationwide rallies organized by the youth initiative “Gen Z regelt” (Gen Z Takes Charge). Demonstrators gathered in around 34 cities, including Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, and Cologne, to voice growing frustration over government policy and economic pressures.
The movement’s core demands target deteriorating educational facilities, high inflation, and rising costs of living. Protesters are calling for increased public spending on education and healthcare, relief from rising living costs, protections against expanding state surveillance, and strong climate action. The movement has also voiced firm opposition to proposed compulsory military service.
While daytime marches remained mostly peaceful, several urban centers experienced clashes as night fell. In Frankfurt, unrest escalated into shopfront looting, property damage, and confrontations with law enforcement involving Molotov cocktails, prompting heavy police deployments. Similar disruptions led to march cancellations and barricade fires in Cologne and Hamburg, while organizers announced plans for further national action later this month.
