Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki has recommended senior advocate Sabita Bhandari Baral as the country’s new Attorney General, marking a historic first for Nepal. President Ram Chandra Paudel will now formalize the appointment based on Karki’s recommendation.
Baral, who previously served as an Information Commissioner at the National Information Commission, is widely recognized in the legal fraternity for her expertise and years of advocacy. Her appointment comes after former Attorney General Ramesh Badal stepped down, as is customary when a new government takes office.
The Attorney General holds one of the most important constitutional positions in Nepal, acting as the chief legal advisor to the government and representing the state in legal matters. With Baral assuming the post, she becomes the first woman to ever hold this position, a milestone that coincides with Nepal’s first woman Prime Minister leading the interim government.
Observers say her appointment is a powerful statement at a time when questions of justice and accountability are at the forefront of national politics. It also represents a symbolic step forward for gender representation in Nepal’s governance and legal system.
