Operation of Jatahi customs point begins
KATHMANDU:
One more full-fledged customs point for Nepal-India bilateral trade came into operation from Monday in the central region of the country.
With the launch of Jatahi (Janakpur of Nepal)-Pipraun (Madhubani of India) customs point, the number of customs points for bilateral trade between Nepal and India has reached 28, according to the Department of Customs.
“The customs point was officially inaugurated in the presence of locals of both countries, business people and assistance commissioner from Muzaffarpur customs point of India.”
Nepal and India had principally agreed to open new customs points during the director general level talks of the customs department that was held in Kathmandu in April last year. Following the Cabinet’s nod on November 20, both the governments had ratified the letter of exchange (LoE) to bring the customs point into operation. Earlier, there was a sub-customs point at Jatahi-Pipraun.
Authorities of both sides expect this customs point to facilitate the traders of the central region, who are facing difficulties in exporting and importing various products as the Janakpur-Jayanagar rail service has been halted since last year for upgradation.
