Nepal and Canada have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across a wide range of sectors following the successful conclusion of the fourth meeting of the Nepal–Canada Bilateral Consultation Mechanism (BCM) in Kathmandu on Monday. The two sides agreed to continue regular consultations to further deepen mutual understanding and enhance the longstanding partnership between the two countries.
During the meeting, both delegations reviewed the full spectrum of Nepal–Canada relations and expressed satisfaction over the enduring friendship and cooperation that have continued since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1965. According to Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the discussions covered key areas including political relations, trade and investment, development cooperation, education, climate change, clean energy, agriculture, information technology, people-to-people exchanges, and consular affairs.
The Nepali delegation highlighted the government's ongoing economic reform agenda and initiatives aimed at creating a more favourable environment for foreign investment and private sector participation. In response, the Canadian side welcomed Nepal's reform efforts and acknowledged the country's progress in improving the investment climate. Canada also commended Nepal's leadership in advancing climate action, promoting electric vehicles, expanding green energy and rural electrification, and maintaining its commitment to democratic governance, sustainable development, and economic transformation.
The meeting also featured exchanges on regional and global issues of common concern, including climate action, United Nations peacekeeping operations, human rights, and cooperation in multilateral forums. Both countries reiterated their commitment to working together to address shared global challenges and strengthen collaboration at the international level.
The consultation was held in a cordial and constructive atmosphere, reflecting the close and friendly ties between Nepal and Canada. The meeting was co-chaired by Dilip Kumar Paudel, Joint Secretary and Head of the North and South America Division at Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Jean-Christian Brillant, Director General for the South Asia Bureau at Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development.
The Nepali delegation comprised officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant government agencies, while the Canadian delegation included Mark Allen, Deputy Ambassador of Canada, Dr Buddha Basnyat, Honorary Consul of Canada in Nepal, and Tejdeep Kaur, Senior Economic Officer at the Embassy of Canada in New Delhi.
The Bilateral Consultation Mechanism was established under a Memorandum of Understanding signed by Nepal and Canada in September 2018. Both sides agreed that the next meeting of the mechanism will be held in Canada on a mutually convenient date, underscoring their shared commitment to further expanding bilateral cooperation in the years ahead.
