The government has increased the duty free limit for goods carried by travelers through land border points to Rs. 500, providing relief to cross-border commuters and shoppers. The Ministry of Finance published a notice in the Rajpatra allowing customs officials to waive duties on personal-use items worth up to Rs. 500 brought into or taken out of the country through land checkpoints.

Previously, under a notice issued on Jestha 15, 2082, travelers were not permitted to bring goods worth more than Rs. 100 without paying customs duties. The rule had sparked tensions and protests at several border crossings in recent weeks.

Under the revised provision, customs officials may allow personal-use goods worth up to Rs. 500 to pass duty-free after assessing their appropriateness. However, travelers using land routes will still not receive the same customs facilities available to air passengers.

The government has also retained the existing provision allowing Nepali students studying in India to bring either one tablet or one computer into Nepal without paying customs duty.
