The high-level committee sitting to discuss the import ban had recommended opening the import of alcohol and mobile phones. However, PM instructed to uplift the ban only after the situation gets back to normal.
The government has chosen to continue the import restrictions on cars, motorcycles, cell phones, and alcohol in place. As per the government’s decision, these four items have been subjected to an import ban until Ashoj 28. The decision to prolong the import ban on expensive goods was made at the Council of Ministers meeting on Monday.
The import restrictions on 10 items that have been in place since last Baisakh 13th have been continued, but certain restrictions have been lessened.
Whereas the import of kurkure, lays, cigarette, TV, diamond, playing cards, and toys has been opened.
Beginning on Shrawan 1, plans were re-established to allow the import of mobile phones up to $300, while plans had been made to prevent imports of items costing more than $600 on Bhaishakh 13.
The CC was also decreased for motorbikes. Originally, it was prohibited to import motorcycles with engines larger than 250 cc, but on Shrawan 1st, this rule was altered to prohibit the importation of motorcycles with engines larger than 150 cc.
The country had a significant current account deficit as a result of the excessive outflow of foreign currency. Additionally, import capacity decreased from 12 to 6 months. Because of this, the government has decided to continue the import ban of pricy luxury goods.
