World Children’s Day 2025 is being observed today across the world, including Nepal, under the theme “My Day, My Rights.” This year’s focus underscores the importance of empowering children, ensuring their voices are heard, and recognizing their fundamental rights. Another key message, “For Every Child, Every Right,” highlights that every child deserves love, protection, and opportunities to grow and thrive.

Celebrated each year on 20 November at the call of the United Nations, World Children’s Day, also known as Universal Children’s Day, holds historical significance. On this day in 1959, the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, and exactly 30 years later, in 1989, it adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the most widely ratified human rights treaty in history. Since 1990, the Day has marked the anniversaries of both landmark declarations, reinforcing global commitment to child welfare.

UNICEF, the UN agency dedicated to protecting children and their rights, has called on governments, communities, and individuals to uplift the voices of children everywhere. The organization stressed that children and young people are not just beneficiaries but key drivers of change, offering fresh ideas and perspectives essential for building a better and more inclusive world.

In his message on World Children’s Day, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that despite global progress, children’s rights continue to face serious threats from poverty, conflict, inequality, and climate change. He urged the global community to listen to children, support their advocacy, and work collectively to create a safe, fair, and nurturing environment for every child.
