The Federal Parliament of Nepal gets the heads of 12 major committees today, marking a significant step in the legislative process. These groups, often called thematic committees, focus on specific areas of governance such as finance, law, and international relations. Of the 12 positions, 10 belong to the House of Representatives (HoR), while two are joint committees that include members from both the HoR and the National Assembly.

The nominations show a diverse range of candidates across various sectors. For the HoR committees, notable nominees include:

  • Dr. Krishna Hari Budhathoki for Finance.
  • Sunnima Udas for International Relations and Tourism.
  • Rahabar Ansari for Industry, Commerce, Labour, and Consumer Welfare.
  • Samikshya Baskota for Law, Justice, and Human Rights.
  • Hati Dhakal for State Affairs and Good Governance.
  • Bharat Bahadur Khadka for Public Accounts.
  • Ashish Gajurel for Women and Social Affairs.
  • Ashok Chaudhary for Agriculture, Cooperative, and Natural Resources.

In some areas, there is direct competition. The Education, Health, and Information Technology Committee sees a contest between Dr. Ojaswi Sherchan (Rastriya Swatantra Party) and Guru Prasad Baral (CPN-UML). Similarly, for the joint committee overseeing the Implementation of State Directive Principles, Ganesh Karki (RSP) is running against Madan Kumari Shah (Garima) of the Nepali Communist Party. Meanwhile, Bodh Narayan Shrestha stands as the nominee for the powerful Parliamentary Hearing Committee.

Following the selection process, the newly elected presidents will officially assume their roles this evening. The swearing in ceremony was scheduled at 4:00 PM, where Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal administered the oath of office and secrecy, allowing the committees to begin their formal oversight and legislative duties.
