KATHMANDU:

The Supreme Court (SC) today issued a showcause notice to the government seeking reasons as to why the residents of Ramechhap district were excluded from the Upper Tamakoshi Hydro Power Project’s share distribution.

A single bench of Justice Girish Chandra Lal issued the notice calling for submission with preferential rights and summoning both the sides to be present on March 17 to discuss whether or not to issue an interim order over the issue.

Advocates Yadav Prasad Dhungana and Thari Prasad Kandel, and locals of Ramechhap district had jointly filed a writ petition against the Office of Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers, Energy Ministry and the project citing a certain amount of shares had been offered to the residents of Dolakha as an affected area but not to the folks in Ramechhap.

Petitioners said locals of Manthali, district headquarters, and locals of 11 other VDCs are affected by Tamakoshi river through which water from Tsho Rolpa lake flows. The writs filed earlier in connection to share distribution of the project are pending at the SC.
