PM Karki to Begin Duties from Newly Built Office in Home Ministry Compound

Prime Minister Sushila Karki is set to officially assume office today at 11 a.m. from the newly constructed building inside the old Ministry of Home Affairs compound. Senior officials have been called in early to welcome her, according to the Prime Minister’s Office. Karki had already moved into the official residence at Baluwatar on Friday evening, following security advice to remain there instead of returning to her private residence.
Preparations for her new office were completed after staff, led by Chief Secretary Ekanarayan Aryal, assessed options for relocation. Items salvaged from the fire-damaged Prime Minister’s Office and Council of Ministers have been transferred to the new premises, which were cleaned and furnished for immediate use.
Meanwhile, several ministries are being shifted to alternative spaces due to fire damage caused during the recent protests. The Home Ministry will move into the old General Administration Ministry building within Singha Durbar. The Education Ministry will return to Keshar Mahal, while the Health Ministry will operate partly from the Nepal Health Research Council office. Some usable sections of its Ramshahpath building will also remain in use.
The Department of Roads, whose Babarmahal office was torched, will relocate to Chakupat near Patan Dhoka, where it had temporarily operated after the 2015 earthquake. The Department of Urban Development and Building Construction has confirmed that fire-damaged blocks in its compound will not be usable, with surviving rooms repurposed for continued operations. Other ministries affected by the blaze are expected to secure new office spaces on their own.
