Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has directed banks and financial institutions to make new Rs 100 notes available through ATMs ahead of Dashain and other major festivals.
Following the directive, some banks and financial institutions have started dispensing Rs 100 notes through newly upgraded ATMs.
NRB spokesperson Guru Prasad Poudel said the central bank has arranged for customers to obtain clean and usable banknotes from NRB offices and commercial banks during the festive season.
He said the bank has avoided extensive publicity about new notes this year in view of the loss of lives and property caused by the Bhotekoshi flood.
The NRB’s Thapathali office, provincial offices and commercial banks have been distributing clean and usable notes since Ashwin 01.
Poudel said the NRB has also been gradually reducing the practice of introducing large quantities of new notes specifically for festivals over the past four to five years.
As of Bhadra 31, currency in circulation stood at Rs 7.94 Kharba. The NRB expects currency circulation to increase by around 8–10% during Dashain.
