The Nepal Institute for International Cooperation and Engagement (NIICE) held a discussion on 7 June 2026 in Lalitpur focusing on Singapore’s economic transformation and its anti-corruption model, and whether its practices can be adapted in Nepal.

Speaking at the event, Singaporean expert Leong Sze Hian highlighted how Singapore became a highly developed economy through strong institutions, long-term planning, fiscal discipline, and effective governance. He emphasized that the country’s success is rooted in consistent policy implementation, transparency, and adaptability rather than isolated reforms.

He also explained Singapore’s strict anti-corruption system, where strong enforcement, independent institutions, and severe penalties ensure a high risk of detection and punishment, helping maintain public trust and rule of law.

On economic management, he noted Singapore’s balanced-budget approach and focus on sustainable public spending, combined with structured social support systems in housing, healthcare, and pensions to ensure efficiency and inclusiveness.

A key point of the discussion was Singapore’s culture of “common-sense innovation,” which promotes continuous improvement and problem-solving across all sectors, not just in technology. He also stressed Singapore’s ability to learn from failures and adapt policies over time as a major factor in its success.

The event concluded with reflections on how Nepal could selectively adapt Singapore’s governance and development practices while considering its own political, economic, and social context.
