Nepal Welcomes 85,444 International Tourists in August 2026, Indian Market Leads Arrivals
Nepal welcomed 85,444 international tourists in August 2026, according to arrival data received by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) from the Department of Immigration. The tourist data is a decline from the same month last year, when Nepal recorded 88,680 international tourist arrivals.
India continued to dominate Nepal’s international tourist arrivals in August, contributing 26,373 visitors, or 30.87 percent of total arrivals. China ranked second with 10,304 tourists. Chinese arrivals increased significantly from 7,533 in August 2025, representing a 36.78 percent year-on-year increase.
Sri Lanka also recorded strong growth, with 8,710 visitors arriving in Nepal during the month. The United States contributed 6,293 tourists, while 4,487 visitors arrived from Bangladesh and 3,476 from the United Kingdom.
South Asia remained Nepal’s largest regional tourism market in August, with 41,422 international visitors arriving from the region. Other Asian countries accounted for 18,275 arrivals, while Europe contributed 10,875 visitors.
The Oceania region recorded 2,529 arrivals, marking a 3.86 percent increase compared to the corresponding period last year. Meanwhile, Nepal received 7,473 visitors from the Americas, representing a 2.47 percent year-on-year increase.
The Middle East contributed 1,010 tourists, with arrivals from the region increasing by 6.99 percent. Similarly, 338 tourists arrived from Africa, representing a 4.97 percent increase compared to August 2025.
Several emerging and smaller tourism markets recorded substantial growth during August 2026. Nepal welcomed 769 tourists from Russia, marking a 51.38 percent increase compared to the same month last year.
Cambodia recorded one of the highest percentage increases among the listed markets. Nepal received 68 Cambodian tourists, representing a 277.78 percent year-on-year increase. Bhutan also posted strong growth, with 1,288 visitors arriving in Nepal, an increase of 49.25 percent.
Tourist arrivals from other Asian markets also showed positive momentum. Nepal received 1,618 tourists from Malaysia, representing a 13.07 percent increase compared to August 2025. Similarly, 681 tourists arrived from Thailand, with arrivals from the Thai market increasing by 19.89 percent year on year.
India remained the dominant source market, while China and Sri Lanka recorded particularly notable increases. At the same time, significant growth from Russia, Ukraine, Cambodia and Bhutan points to opportunities for Nepal to further diversify its international tourism base.
