Nepal Launches Online Permit System for Foreign Vehicles Entering via Land Routes
The government has rolled out a new online service aimed at easing travel for Indian tourists and visitors from other countries entering Nepal by road with their vehicles.
The Department of Customs under the Ministry of Finance has introduced a digital system that allows foreign vehicles entering Nepal through land routes to complete necessary forms and pay applicable fees online. Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle officially launched the service at a program held on Tuesday.
With the system now in operation, tourists traveling from India and other countries can submit vehicle details and make payments digitally before entering Nepal. Previously, travelers were required to obtain temporary permits in person at customs checkpoints, and had to revisit these points to extend permits or pay penalties during their stay.
The new system eliminates these hurdles by allowing users to apply for permits from home and travel within Nepal without repeated administrative procedures.
Speaking at the launch, Minister Wagle said the initiative would remove long-standing inconveniences faced by tourists at border points. He added that the move aligns with the government’s commitment to good governance and efficient public service delivery, ensuring faster and smoother services for visitors.
Director General Shyam Prasad Bhandari noted that permits for foreign tourist vehicles have now been fully digitized. To access the service, users need to visit the department’s official website, select the “TIV” option under “Our Services,” and complete the required information online.
Once the form is submitted, users receive a QR code containing their details. After paying the necessary fee, vehicles are cleared to enter Nepal.
According to the Department, while land entry via the Chinese border remains limited, the system is also applicable in such cases. For now, the service is expected to particularly benefit tourists arriving from India and Bangladesh.
