The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has decided to provide an additional 0.50% Smart Pay Reward to domestic electricity consumers who pay their bills through digital platforms, aiming to encourage cashless transactions and promote digital payment services.
The decision was made by the NEA Board of Directors following an initiative by Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Biraj Bhakta Shrestha. The additional reward will initially be implemented for six months, after which the authority will evaluate its effectiveness before deciding whether to continue the scheme.
Under the existing provision, domestic consumers who pay their electricity bills within seven days of meter reading receive a 2% discount. This discount will remain unchanged under the new arrangement, while customers using online payment methods will be eligible for an additional 0.50% reward.
The additional benefit will also be available to domestic consumers who pay their electricity bills online at any time, according to the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation.
The NEA expects the incentive to encourage more consumers to adopt digital payment methods, making electricity bill payments more convenient and reducing reliance on traditional payment channels. The continuation of the reward scheme beyond the initial six-month period will depend on an assessment of its effectiveness and overall impact.
