NACEUN Calls for Local Government Participation in NEA Restructuring
The National Association of Community Electricity Users-Nepal (NACEUN) has stressed the need to ensure the participation of local governments and communities in the restructuring process of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA).
Issuing a press statement on Thursday, NACEUN Chair Narayan Gyawali said the involvement of local bodies and communities is essential for making the NEA restructuring effective and accountable.
He stated that local governments play a vital role in improving the power supply system, reducing electricity leakage, and ensuring efficient service delivery.
“Only the active engagement of local governments and community organizations can ensure swift, transparent, and accountable electricity-related services,” Chair Gyawali said.
The Association also urged the government to immediately withdraw the five percent Value Added Tax (VAT) imposed on consumers using more than 50 units of electricity.
Similarly, Gyawali called for a review of the electricity tariff system, demanding that it be made scientific, practical, and consumer-friendly. He emphasized the need for special incentive packages to promote electricity consumption in agriculture, irrigation, and industrial sectors.
According to him, increasing domestic electricity consumption capacity has become equally urgent for the country.
