Monsoon becoming weak: Risk for monsoon-induced disasters still looms

The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has said that the monsoon is becoming weak from Tuesday night but the risk still looms.

The monsoon air continues to enter Nepal. The country is witnessing partial to generally cloudy weather lately. Although monsoon trough which is responsible for causing rainfall has shifted towards south from Nepal, it was close by in the eastern part of the country which could activate rainfall on Wednesday night.

Although there will not be rainfall across the country like on July 19 and 20, heavy rainfall is predicted in some places of the country such as State No 1, State No 2, Bagmati State and Gandaki State, informed meteorologist Shanti Kandel.

Kandel warned, “Although monsoon has become weak but there is still a risk for monsoon-induced disasters. Since the land is wet already, a slight rainfall could also incur disasters.”
According to her, the water level in many swollen rivers had not subsided yet. Hence, there could be incidents of flood and inundation at any given time.

Weather will be generally cloudy in the country on Thursday while light to medium rainfall is forecasted in some places across the country.

The Department has said that the water level in the rivers such as Koshi, Narayani, Karnali, Mahakali, and their tributaries would recede in the next three days. Hence there was less risk for flood.

The Department has however alerted those residing nearby Kankai, Kamala, and Bagmati rivers, and their tributaries as there could be flash floods in these rivers.
