Korala Border Emerges as Key Trade Route Between Nepal and China

Trade movement between Nepal and China has recently shifted to the Korala border in Mustang after the Rasuwagadhi and Tatopani crossings were cut off by landslides and floods for over two months. The Korala customs office at Nechung began full operations on September 15, creating an alternative gateway for bilateral commerce.
Data from the Department of Customs (DoC) shows the new route is already making an impact, with more than Rs 344.7 million in revenue collected since its opening. Within the first week alone, 209 electric vehicles and 107 cargo trucks entered Nepal through Korala. To ensure smooth processing, the checkpoint has been equipped with the Automated System for Customs Data (ASYCUDA), while Nepal Rastra Bank has started issuing letters of credit for imports via this route.
Officials describe Korala as a vital substitute trade corridor until the traditional Rasuwagadhi and Tatopani routes reopen. The steady flow of vehicles and goods in recent weeks also highlights Korala’s potential to serve as a reliable long-term trade link between Nepal and China.
