KMC to Launch Neighborhood Film Festivals Across Kathmandu
The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has announced the launch of a new initiative titled 'Film Festival in Every Neighborhood.' The campaign aims to bridge the gap between film professionals and local communities while honoring the contributions of the film industry. By bringing cinema directly to local residents, the city hopes to elevate filmmaking as a respected profession and build a deeper public appreciation for the craft.
The project will be led by KMC’s Heritage and Tourism Department. To execute the festival at the grassroots level, the metropolis plans to partner with various local groups, including youth clubs, community groups, neighborhood development committees, cultural associations, traditional organizations, and non-profits dedicated to social and cultural causes.
Ashaman Sangat, Coordinator of KMC’s Heritage and Tourism Committee, stated that the screenings will take place in open public areas. These venues will include parks, courtyards, squares, amphitheaters, and traditional Newar community spaces such as Baha: and Bahi (historical residential courtyards and junctions).
To manage these community events, KMC has officially invited proposals from interested organizations. According to Department Chief Kumari Rai, groups wishing to collaborate must submit their proposals through the KMC website by midnight tonight, June 10.
To ensure the festival maintains high standards, the city will form a dedicated committee. This panel will be responsible for selecting films based on their content, presentation, and quality, while also monitoring and regulating the overall campaign.
